Wathnan Racing’s Haatem Roars Back with G3 Mint Millions Victory in America

Haatem, carrying the colours of Wathnan Racing, returned to the winner’s circle in emphatic fashion by landing the Grade 3 Mint Millions Invitational Stakes at Kentucky Downs on Monday, September 7, 2026.
The five-year-old was partnered by veteran jockey Jamie Spencer for British trainer Richard Hannon Jr. in the one-mile turf contest for three-year-olds and upwards, which attracted a field of ten.
The Mint Millions carried an advertised purse of $2 million, including $1 million in Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund money.
From a Slow Start to Victory
Haatem did not enjoy the cleanest of breaks and initially found himself at the rear of the field.

Spencer, however, allowed him to recover gradually. Haatem moved into fifth after the opening quarter-mile and progressed into third by halfway, tracking the battle for the lead.
Approaching the final turn, Spencer angled Haatem to the outside before launching his challenge four wide into the stretch.
Haatem took command inside the final furlong and showed his trademark determination to repel the late challenge of Lagynos, securing victory by a neck.
He completed the mile in 1:34.32 on firm turf.
Lagynos finished runner-up, while Brilliant Berti took third.

Haatem earned $573,500 for his victory, providing another significant international success for Wathnan Racing.
The performance was particularly notable given the strength of the field, which included multiple Grade 1 winner Formidable Man and former Dubai Turf hero Facteur Cheval, among several other graded or group-race winners.

The success ended a lengthy wait for Haatem, whose previous victory came in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 17, 2025, when he defeated Galen.
His Kentucky Downs triumph therefore marked his first victory for nearly 15 months and his first Graded/Group success since landing the G3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2024.
Before the race, trainer Richard Hannon described Haatem as an exceptionally tough horse with a strong constitution and highlighted his remarkable record of winning at Royal Ascot in consecutive years.
Following the victory, Wathnan Racing manager Case Clay hailed Haatem’s enduring quality and indicated that the team would discuss several options before deciding on his next target.
A Proven High-Class Performer
The Irish-bred five-year-old is by Phoenix Of Spain out of Hard Walnut, a daughter of Cape Cross, and was bred by Hyde Park Stud.
Haatem joined Wathnan Racing in June 2024 and has built an impressive résumé featuring success and placings at the highest level.
