New Rules and Regulations Introduced for Show Jumping at Asian Games

New rules and regulations will be introduced for the first time in the team and individual show-jumping competitions at the Asian Games in Japan, with the UAE national team among the participating teams.
The show-jumping events will be held at the Equestrian Park of the Japan Racing Association in Tokyo. The new regulations introduce a major change to the competition format, with two individual competitions being held for the first time alongside the team competition, with separate medals awarded in each.

Individual Competition A will be held over obstacles ranging from 1.45 to 1.50 meters, while Individual Competition B, the higher category, will feature 1.55-meter obstacles. The team competition will be held over 1.45-meter obstacles in a two-round format, with each national team fielding three or four riders and its best three results counting toward the final score.
Riders will not be assigned to the two individual categories based on their results in the team competition. Instead, each national federation must specify in advance, when submitting its final entry, which individual category each rider will compete in, with a maximum of two riders allowed in each individual competition. A rider may not compete in both individual competitions.

Under the new system, each national team can compete for a maximum of five medals: one team medal and two medals in each of Individual Competitions A and B.
The UAE team will field Abdullah Humaid Al Muhairi and Humaid Abdullah Al Muhairi in Individual Competition A, while Sheikha Latifa bint Ahmed Al Maktoum and Omar Abdulaziz Al Marzouqi will compete in Individual Competition B.
The eligibility requirements also stipulate that the rider and horse must have jointly met the minimum qualification requirements in two different international competitions. The first must be a two-star event over 1.45-meter obstacles, with no more than four penalty points, while the second must be at least a three-star event over 1.50-meter obstacles, with no more than eight penalty points. These results must have been achieved between January 1, 2025, and June 22, 2026. Participants in Individual Competition B must additionally meet the requirements for competitions over 1.55-meter obstacles.

The veterinary inspection process for the show-jumping horses will begin on September 29, with a re-inspection scheduled for the following day for horses requiring further examination. The team final will then take place on Thursday, October 1, with the first and second rounds followed by the medal ceremony.

The first round of Individual Competitions A and B will be held on October 3. Individual Competition B will then feature its first and second rounds on October 4, followed by the medal ceremony. The final of Individual Competition B will subsequently be held in the second round, followed by the awards ceremony.
