Comeback King Paborus Lands G3 Chipchase Stakes
Mdmar – Wathnan Racing – Newcastle
Just one day shy of having a full year away from the track, Wathnan Racing’s Paborus bounced back to action in fine style to win the G3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle on Saturday for trainer Ed Bethell.

This represented a fifth victory from only eight starts for the five-year-old son of Recoletos, who had a length and a half in hand over runner-up Marvelman, with the same distance back to the Godolphin-owned Symbol Of Honour, who took third.

“Honestly, I thought he would definitely need the run, so I will imagine he will take a big step forward from this and it is a big pat on the back for the whole team,” said Bethell. “He has had niggly issues, but the Wathnan team have been very patient.”

The trainer added that the G2 Lennox Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival could be next on the agenda for Paborus.

Winning jockey Callum Rodriguez said, “He is a horse I have always loved and this is a very good training performance from Ed and the team after a full year off the track.”

Over in Ireland, the Wathnan Racing silks were seen to good effect when One Look posted a storming late run to take second in the G1 Pretty Polly Stakes behind Estrange to finish a length clear of the Oaks winner Thundering On in fourth. She too could make the trip to Goodwood for the G1 Nassau Stakes.
