Simon Delestre Sparkles to Victory on Longines Global Champions Tour of London Opening Day in Lugano Diamonds Trophy


The glamorous CSI5* Longines Global Champions Tour of London began in spectacular style today in the Lugano Diamonds Trophy, setting the stage for an exhilarating week of world-class competition. In a heart-stopping display that had the crowd on the edge of their seats, the “flying Frenchman” Simon Delestre lived up to his reputation, claiming victory in the day’s highly anticipated big class aboard Olga van de Kruishoeve. Delestre clinched the win by a mere 0.35 seconds, setting the tone for a weekend of fierce competition.


The Longines Global Champions Tour of London is not only a celebration of equestrian athleticism but also an embodiment of a luxurious lifestyle. The event drew a constellation of VIPs, including celebrities and notable figures, who eagerly awaited the stunning performances and unforgettable moments. Second place was secured by Richard Vogel on Churchill 48, finishing in 60.12 seconds, while Sophie Hinners and Ghia Pe followed closely in 61.62 seconds. Just missing out on a podium finish was the home crowd favourite and British veteran, John Whitaker, who rode Sharid to a commendable fourth place.

The top eight showcased the remarkable talent and equine prowess on display at the Longines Global Champions Tour of London. Maikel van der Vleuten on Elwikke, David Will on Zaccorado Blue, Christian Ahlmann on Otterongo Alpha Z, and Niels Bruynseels with the ever-consistent Matador rounded out the elite group, each delivering impressive performances.

Speaking to Rosie Turner of GCTV, Simon spoke of his winning partner, he said, “Olga is such a competitive horse, I really have fun riding her. I can take the first distance off every turn, and with such a lovely course built by Uliano Vezzani, this show couldn’t have started better.”

With thrilling rounds scattered throughout the starting order, Edwina Tops-Alexander aboard Uppercourt Cappucino continued their form and successfully challenged fellow clear round competitors with a time of 66.28 sec to round off the top 10.

With 44 leading riders and entries into the second 5* class for the LGCT London competition saw an impressive line-up of riders take to the arena. Oliver Fletcher looked to replicate his stellar performance in the first class, but a few seconds off the clock left him in 9th.

Talking after win in the first class of the day Fletcher said: “I look forward to this show all year and today proves just why with this incredible atmosphere. The crowd, facilities everything is perfect so looking forward to a good weekend ahead.”

With the legend John Whitaker finishing as the highest-placed British rider in front of the home crowd, it was electric from start to finish in the Lugano Diamonds 1.45m speed class setting the scene for the rest of the weekend in front of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

It wasn’t the day for Pieter Deovs onboard Jarina J, Gilles Thomas riding Elfra van Beek Z and Nicola Pohl with Arlo de Blondel who all looked up on time but two down for all the combinations kept them off the podium today. Local favourite Scott Brash opted for a cruisy round aboard Chadora Lady posting a picture-perfect clear round but at a steady pace clearly saving himself for the big weekend ahead with a €500,000 Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of London to come on Sunday.

Beyond the thrilling competitions, attendees enjoyed an immersive experience in the vibrant shopping village, complemented by captivating entertainment from British Agility and The Knights of Middle England. The village featured a curated selection of high-end brands and luxury products, offering visitors a unique opportunity to indulge in retail therapy amidst the event’s electric atmosphere.
