Deusser Dominates Under the Lights with Blistering Jump-Off Win in Shanghai

Mdmar – Shanghai – LGCT
Shanghai lit up on day two of the Longines Global Champions Tour as Daniel Deusser delivered a breathtaking performance in the CSI5* 1.50m jump-off presented by LAO FENG XIANG. With the skyline shimmering and the grandstands packed, the atmosphere at the Shanghai Juss International Equestrian Centre crackled with energy as the elite of the sport went head-to-head in a high-stakes showdown.
Riding the electric 11-year-old Otello de Guldenboom, Deusser, first to go in the final round, laid down an unbeatable time, slicing every corner with precision and daring every inside line. His fearless round held strong against a stacked field, earning him a second victory of the weekend and sparking a roar of approval from the local crowd.

Speaking to GCTV after his win, Deusser, already a podium finisher at the LGCT Grand Prix of Doha, said: “The horse is very good shape, he won already yesterday… today I didn’t have the best position to go first in the competition and then first in the jump off. I tried to take a certain risk to put a little bit of pressure on the others that followed, and it was just enough!”

Peter Grant’s track demanded perfection, and the elite field rose to the challenge. Daniel Deusser put down a formidable time as first to go, forcing the 16-strong field to dig deep for the win. Gilles Thomas ultimately settled for second, just a whisker behind with Elfra van Beek Z. Flying Frenchman Simon Delestre, once again, proved his consistency with a brilliant round aboard Golden Boy DK, clinching third.
Hot on the heels of the podium finishers was powerhouse Maximilian Weishaupt, who delivered a silky smooth round aboard Kokomo B to claim fourth place in style. Thibeau Spits set the early pace with a bold, clean round on Conrad Quality Z, laying down the gauntlet for the rest of the field.
From the roar of the crowd to the razor-sharp margins, it was a night that encapsulated the very spirit of the Longines Global Champions Tour – elite sport, world-class showmanship, and unforgettable moments. Beyond the sport, guests soaked up the full Shanghai experience in the vibrant shopping village, where luxury brands and handcrafted treasures offered a taste of indulgence in the heart of the action.

It was Daniel Deusser who stormed to victory aboard Otello de Guldenboom, setting a blistering pace of 39.98 seconds as the very first rider to take on the jump-off. With the pressure on from the outset, Deusser’s daring lines and flawless execution proved unbeatable – a textbook example of experience meeting risk at just the right balance.

Birthday boy Denis Lynch followed with a polished clear round, but couldn’t quite match Deusser’s pace. Belgium’s Wilm Vermeir and Brazil’s Luiz Felipe Cortizo de Azevedo Filho also kept the poles up, opting for smooth, calculated rides, but neither could come close to threatening the early benchmark.
All eyes were on Julien Anquetin – Friday’s speed class winner and a known jump-off threat. He came out blazing aboard Farah Tame, launching a fierce attack at the plank and risking it all in the final stretch. But fortune didn’t favour the brave this time, with three rails falling as he pushed for the win.
Maximilian Weishaupt looked on track, just under a second off at the halfway point, but a wide approach to the penultimate fence cost him dearly, forcing him to settle behind Deusser. Thibeau Spits opted for a tight turn to the double, managing a tidy clear but still two seconds adrift with Conrad Quality Z.

Young talent Inès Joly, fresh from a podium finish earlier in the day, gave it a solid effort aboard the same mount of Imposant van de Renger, showing composure and skill under pressure. Though she produced a clean round, her time fell short of the leaders. Zoe Conter looked poised to shake up the leaderboard with a lightning-fast start, but a heavy hit at the fourth fence shattered her chances and dashed hopes of Belgian victory onboard Tombola Z.
On flying form this week Ben Maher with Enjeu de Grisien and Emanuele Gaudiano Esteban de Hus both took aggressive approaches, but one pole down each derailed their efforts. Late contenders, including Gilles Thomas and Eduardo Alvarez Azna,r came agonisingly close – Thomas led at the halfway split but lost time on the final line, while Aznar, last to go, had the crowd on the edge of their seats until a rail fell, handing the win to Deusser once and for all.
Shanghai witnessed a jump-off masterclass tonight – fast, fierce, and unforgettable – with Daniel Deusser proving that sometimes, going first means going fastest.
As the dust settles on today’s high-stakes jump-off, the focus now shifts to the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Shanghai. With all of the top-qualified from last year and chasing back-to-back victories, it is all to play for. The pressure is on.
